Camping Weekend

Organiser: Stephen Thacker

mailto: stephen.thacker@uwe.ac.uk

Please register if you intend to come.

This is a weekend trip -arriving Friday evening, paddling Saturday and Sunday.

Skill Level: ITP pass or above (but see 'Leaders' below). Please let the organiser know what skill level you are.

Leaders: there is likely to be a charge for a local guide/coach: this usually costs around £35 - £50 each per day. If you are below 3* you will need a leader so assume you will need to pay for one. If 3* you can of course go with a leader or organise a peer paddle. If suitably experienced BCC members are available they may organise a trip for free on one of the days (quite likely).

There may be a guided trip to Skomer Island if there is enough interest.

What to expect: 2x one-day return trips on the sea, taking in the scenery, rock-hopping if the opportunity presents itself, a lunch stop on the beach (bring packed lunch) and plenty of time to chatter whilst paddling. These are social paddles.

There are usually enough people to split into 2 or 3 groups which we organise by experience level and/or what people wish to do. Usually one group will be beginners, some who have never been on the sea before, those at 3* may well do a couple of hours paddling each way at a reasonable but not fast pace, maybe 20-25km round trip. Some may wish to do more. What we do depends on who comes and what you want to do. We all meet up at the end of the day to swop tales, which get better as the evening progresses.

A Beautiful coastline, with interesting wildlife; including puffins on Skomer/Skokholm.
Paddling for all abilities – St Brides Bay (Newgale to Little Haven & Little Haven to Martin Haven), Martin Haven to Dale, sheltered Milford Haven, Skomer & Skokholm and scope for surfing.

Accommodation: usually camping, returning to the same campsite at the end of each day. You will need to arrange accommodation. We will be based at:

about 2 miles west of Marloes Pembs at:
 WEST HOOK FARM     http://www.westhookfarm-camping.co.uk/

See the website for useful information on nearby eating places, pubs, beaches etc.
Tent, 1 Adult and car £6.50 no need to book.

Most people are tired after a days paddling and eat at a nearby pub. A few hardy folk cook at the campsite.

Age: If under 18 you must be accompanied by a responsible adult for the whole trip including on the water, unless the trip organiser has specifically agreed otherwise.

Responsibility: You will be expected to take responsibility for your own kit and general safety.

Kit: If you need a club boat email the quartermaster mailto:quartermaster@bathcanoeclub.co.uk

Keys: You will need to make your own arrangements with a key-holder to get into the club if you don't have keys.

Safe-code: For boats and other kit you will need the keys in the safe. For the safe-code mailto:code@bathcanoeclub.co.uk The code changes frequently.

Transport: For environmental and economic reasons we should car share as much as possible. However with sea kayaks only 2 per car is recommended. Actual cost between you and driver/passenger.

Questions / registering interest: please email organiser
