Bath Canoe Club welcomes new people to join us kayaking and canoeing!

The club is entirely run by friendly volunteers, which includes qualified coaches who provide the various courses according to British Canoeing standards.

Boats, paddles, buoyancy aids, helmets, and spray decks are provided. The club has changing rooms and showers. Please wear clothes that can get a wet, a wetsuit is good but not essential, depending on the weather. Bring a towel and dry clothes!


If you just want to try it out first, then our 3 hour taster session on a Saturday afternoon is right for you.

This is your first time on the water 'having a go'! A fun and enjoyable practical session, introducing you to paddlesport.

Experience your first session on the water; learn useful skills for an enjoyable paddling experience. It aims to provide you with the basic knowledge to enable you to safely get in and out of your boat, make it move and return to your start point. This is your first step into the world of paddling, ensuring you feel safe, confident and ready to progress to the next step.

You will have earned the new BC recognised "Paddle Start Award" at the end of it.

Suitable for ages 8 - 99 (under 18s need to be accompanied).  Please register in the Event Diary - see the What's On page.



If you have already tried kayaking or you want to jump straight onto a course then this is for you.

It will take you on the next steps towards becoming an independent paddler, for a fun and safe time on the water. Develop an understanding of the factors which affect your paddling; develop your decision making and practical skills, giving you confidence on the water.

This course leads to the BC recognised "Paddle Discover Award" (previously known as the "1 Star Award") in either kayaking or canoeing.

Currently this is suitable for adults only, but look out for family courses which might be offered later in the year.  Please register below.

The course consists of a pool session on a Monday evening at the pool at Kingswood School to go through basic capsize drills in nice warm water. There will then be 6 weekly session on the river based from the clubhouse. These will either be on a Tuesday or Thursday evening from 6pm til 9pm. 

Once you have completed a course you will be able to continue paddling on either a Tuesday or Thursday evening with coach led sessions. These are free but only available if you have become a member. Alternatively you can of course progress onto the next course.



If you have already completed the beginner course ("Paddle Discover Award" or "1 Star Award") then you can take the “Paddle Explore” course leading to the BC “Paddle Explore Award” (previously known as the “2 Star Award”).

Your Explore Award gives you ownership; allowing you to choose where you move next in the world of paddle sport. 

Working with a coach you will be able to develop a programme that suits what you need. Learning to make confident choices with this individualised approach. This award recognises your ability to independently paddle your chosen craft in a sheltered water environment. 

Learn how to choose and effectively use equipment, whilst developing an understanding of the factors which affect your paddling; giving you the confidence to progress to making your own choices with the Explorer Award.

This course is held over 4 consecutive weeks on either Tuesday or Thursday evenings.  Please register below.



You don’t need to become a member to take part in the courses but if you do then you will save 50% on the courses.

If you intend to keep on paddling after the course then the cheapest way to do it is to become a member first and then get half price courses, this will save you £60 on the single adult price for instance.
