Youth Development Canoe & Kayak Sessions

These Youth Development Sessions are aimed at 13 to 17-year-olds.  Numbers are limited, and places will be offered on a first come-first served basis.

These will run every Monday through to early September 2022

Timings:

  • Parental Drop-off at Club House 5.45pm
  • On River by 6.00-6.15pm.
  • Off River by 7.30pm
  • Parental Pick-up 8pm latest.

What is covered?

  1. Clothing and equipment information, think of it like a crash course in everything you need to physically get yourself on the water, covering all the types of equipment you’ll need
  2. Tips for getting on the water including how to get safely in and out of your canoe or kayak from different places you are likely to paddle
  3. Learn practical skills such as paddling forward, turning, and stopping… pretty much everything you need to get started and moving
  4. Staying safe on and off the water, you’ll learn about how to stay safe and make the most out of your paddle session. 

Once the above basics are covered

1.     We will introduce participants to try other kayak and canoe craft, including competitive racing kayaks.    

2.     We will explore the local river, with perhaps a trip to Warleigh Weir, or downstream below Pulteney Weir, or perhaps venture to the nearby Kennet & Avon canal.  Next stages, we hope to be responsive to the wishes and needs of the group.

3.     Throughout all activities, fun and adventure is intended.

All canoeing equipment will be provided but you will need your own clothing plus a lightweight jacket and old trainers, not crocs. You will get wet so don't wear your best clothes! Make sure you have dry clothes to change into afterwards.     

Full changing and shower facilities are available in the Clubhouse.

THERE IS MINIMAL PARKING AT THE CLUBHOUSE, IDEALLY ARRIVE ON FOOT.

Charging Structure:

Charges for these come & try it youth sessions will be a concessionary £5 per session, per individual.  Monthly charges will up to a maximum of £20 per month.  (Club Taster secessions are normally £20 per individual).

Those who wish to continue as full members of the club, are welcome to convert the weekly session charge towards the annual club annual membership of £69.  Example if a youth has had 4 sessions @ £5 per session (£20) the annual membership is reduced to only £49 for the year.

Parental Responsibilities

We operate Child Protection Policies and code of conduct.  Linked to this, there will be Medical Declarations, Parental/guardian Consent/Application paperwork covering for instance drop-off/pickup and safeguarding considerations.   These forms will need to be completed beforehand.
